Somatic-based dance improvisations that recognize the potential of the body as having more than one “center,” more than one location in the body from where movement emerges. Further dances exercise basic movement principles, encourage moving in a way that feels good for each person, and go for ecstatic embodiment.
Slow down the fast-paced thoughts. Ease into the rhythm of the body. Enjoy 60 minutes of guided breathing, stretches, somatic improvisations and energy transformative reboot to celebrate being in a body. Knowledge will be sourced from Andean ritual ofrendas, Caribbean festivities, somatic dance practices, and adrienne maree brown’s “Pleasure Activism.” Exercises that encourage deep release are inspired by Anna Halprin’s Movement Ritual. Each class culminates with dances to cathartic, energizing, and soulful music. Join us as we learn to appropriately cite and weave Afro-Indigenous syncretisms into our dance practices.
"The classes have shown me more options and freedom to grow my improvisation practice. Amelia said, 'Make it weird,' and that gave me license to try new things with the steps! ... I could then feel the steps more integrated in my body, like when you wear your own dress and it's tailored to your body."
